Populist ideas have captured the hearts and minds of voters. Simplistic policies—from the left and the right—offer easy solutions to complex issues and policies. Rather than reject these ideas offhand, we suggest that populist proposals can be a source of policy innovation.
Economic analysis can serve the role of evaluating policies in a rigorous framework, which may lead to new approaches to policy problems that are assessed in a simulation context.
Please join economic associates Harry Walsh and Kyle Compton for a luncheon presentation in Des Moines, Iowa on Wednesday, January 9th, 2019 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. titled “Populism, Policy Analysis and the Economy.”
Also covered are the key policy issues and topics following the 2018 election—tax and budgeting, transportation, economic development, energy/environment. Participants will gain insight into the economic, demographic, and fiscal implications of policy proposals.

Since joining REMI, Mr. Walsh has assisted with model calibrations for clients and software quality assurance. He has also contributed to REMI’s outward facing efforts, including the development of the company’s new website and preparing seminar presentations incorporating the REMI model.
Prior to REMI, he worked as an intern at the Massachusetts State House of Representatives, where he delivered daily briefings to a representative and researched a bond bill in debate. While at UMass Amherst, Mr. Walsh was an elected leader of the Undergraduate Economics Club, and served as editor-in-chief for the Massachusetts Undergraduate Journal of Economics.
Mr. Walsh graduated from UMass Amherst with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics.

He also assisted in sales and marketing through data analysis and development of a regular benchmarking system.
Prior to starting at REMI, Mr. Compton was a research intern/consultant for Verité, a nonprofit organization that conducts research, advocacy and consulting on global working conditions. He presented original research on panel-regression analysis of the causes of forced labor and researched labor profiles of emerging economies. Building on his work for Verité, he earned the James Kindahl Award in Economics from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst for his paper, “Determinants of Forced Labor: Evidence from 21 Emerging Economies.” The paper is under review for publishing in the Massachusetts Undergraduate Journal of Economics.
Mr. Compton earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from UMass Amherst.
