REMI will be sponsoring a luncheon in Maryland at Towson University on Tuesday, May 15th, 2018 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Michael Siers, Senior Research Manager at Towson University’s Regional Economic Studies Institute (RESI), will give a talk titled “Racial Disparities in Baltimore City’s Workforce and Implications for Future Growth,” and REMI Economist Peter Evangelakis, Ph.D. will be presenting “Tariffs and the Economy.”
While policy makers and economists often focus on total economic growth, public policies can result in disparate effects on different demographic groups. Understanding how employment varies across racial and ethnic lines is critical to addressing concerns about inequality. For his presentation, Mr. Siers will examine Baltimore City’s economy and how different racial and ethnic groups are represented in the workforce.
Additionally, he will explore graduation data across racial and ethnic lines as well as REMI’s forecasts to examine the future of these divisions. He also will describe how to incorporate equity analyses into modeling simulations using REMI PI+, which is especially important when considering between two similar policy scenarios.
For his tariff presentation, Dr. Evangelakis will discuss approaches for using the REMI model to evaluate the total benefits and costs of tariffs to the national economy. His analysis will follow the methodology used in a report by NERA Economic Consulting, which estimated outcomes from a 7 percent across-the-board tariff on aluminum imports using the REMI model.
